While some leagues like the German Bundesliga and the French Ligue 1 enjoyed longer breaks than others, all have now resumed normal operations. Given that most championships are at a similar stage of the season, the team at SuperBettingSites has undertaken the task of unveiling the highest-rated defenders in Europe’s top 10 leagues.
Methodology: First, we identified the top 10 European leagues using UEFA’s country coefficients. Then, we selected the top-rated defenders in each of the ten leagues using Whoscored.com. Next, we gathered metrics covering 11 different categories using Squawka.com’s comparison matrix such as “Minutes played”, “Tackles”, “Interceptions” and many more. Lastly, we included the market value of each player from Transfermarkt.com to create a comprehensive overview of the five best-performing defenders in each of the top ten European leagues for the 2023/24 season. Finally, we compiled all the data into a single table to identify the standout defenders in Europe this season.

Notably, Van Dijk stands alone as the sole player in this elite group who has received a red card.

The Scottish Premiership makes its presence felt in the ranking for best rated defenders in Europe, boasting 2 players in the top 10. Rangers’ captain James Tavernier (7.92) has emerged as the highest rated defender across all the leagues under scrutiny. He is also the highest-scoring defender in our comprehensive analysis, having scored an impressive 10 goals. Besides Tavernier, Liam Scales also features in the European top 10, occupying 4th position. What attracted our attention was another player plying his trade in Scotland.
